Welcome to the Capturing Calm

Hello! I’m Ellie Macdonald, I’m an MSc Mindfulness student at the University of Aberdeen, practicing mindful photography while walking in the Scottish Borders.

Capturing Calm explores the connection between mindfulness and photography.

Mindful Photography is a blend of mindfulness and photography. It’s a unique approach to both seeing and capturing the world around us. It's about getting our heads out of the viewfinder and truly engaging with our surroundings.

Instead of chasing the 'perfect' shot, I invite you to savour each moment, each breath, each pixel of light. It's a meditative practice that encourages us to slow down, open our senses and tap into our creative spirit.

Whether you're a seasoned shutterbug or just starting out, I’m stoked to have you join me in this vibrant journey of exploration, connection, and artistic expression.

By subscribing to Capturing Calm, you'll receive:

  • Techniques and tips for practising mindful photography in various environments.

  • Stories that celebrate calmness and mindfulness in everyday life.

  • A weekly podcast exploring mindful photography techniques and prompts.

Each week, a new mindful practice will hit your inbox for you to try, and every month, you will receive a collection of photos I have taken in nature to celebrate each season.

Where can I follow you online?

You can find me on Instagram: @capturing.calm. I post a weekly nature photo on my feed, along with this week’s photography prompt.
