Where Photography Meets Mindfulness

Exploring the Art of Presence Through the Lens: A Journey into Mindful Photography

Welcome to the inaugural episode of "Capturing Calm," where the art of photography intertwines with the practice of mindfulness. I'm Ellie Macdonald, a nature photographer and a student of Mindfulness and Compassion at the University of Aberdeen. I'm thrilled to embark on this journey with you, blending the realms of visual art and meditative awareness.

Mindful Photography: A Deeper Look

Photography is more than just capturing images; it's a unique way of seeing and experiencing the world. As we delve into mindful photography, it's essential to first understand the core concept of mindfulness, especially in today's world where its true meaning often gets lost in translation.

Mindfulness, as John Kabat-Zinn beautifully defines it, is about being present in the moment without judgment. It's not about emptying your mind but accepting what's there, be it comfortable or not. This non-judgmental awareness is pivotal in mindful photography, where each click of the shutter is a step towards presence and awareness.

Integrating Mindfulness and Photography

Mindful photography is not just a method but a way of life. It teaches us to accept our surroundings - the weather, the environment, the light - and capture them as they are. This practice aligns with mindfulness principles like present-moment awareness, acceptance, and non-judgmental observation.

Formal vs. Informal Mindfulness Practices

Mindfulness can be practised both formally and informally. Formal practices, like meditation or yoga, require a specific set-up and time commitment. Mindful photography, akin to a walking meditation, can be part of this formal practice. On the other hand, informal mindfulness involves integrating awareness into daily activities, such as making a cup of tea or walking.

What Sets Mindful Photography Apart?

Unlike traditional photography, which focuses on technique and composition, mindful photography is about the journey. It's a form of meditation that allows us to connect deeply with our surroundings and appreciate the present moment.

A Simple Exercise to Begin

To start practising mindful photography, I recommend an exercise that doesn't involve a camera. Observe your surroundings, notice the patterns, colours, and light, and see how they make you feel. This practice helps you see the world anew, each time, through a mindful lens.

Join the Journey

I invite you to reflect on how mindful photography can transform your perspective on life. In upcoming episodes, we'll explore various aspects of this practice, speak with experts, and learn how to integrate mindful photography into our lives.
